Diplomats complete summer school courses in Chinese

The closing ceremony of the Diplomats' Chinese Language Training Program was held at the East China Normal University (ECNU) on June 5.

The program was run by Shanghai Summer School and jointly sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (SHMEC) and Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office.

Wang Gang, the deputy director of the Global Education Center of ECNU congratulated the diplomats on completing their courses and then reviewed the program’s development over the last six years. According to Wang, So far, nearly 300 foreign diplomats in Shanghai from more than 40 countries have taken part in the program.


Dejian Marinkovik, the Serbian Consul General in Shanghai, delivered a speech on behalf of all the participants. He shared his feelings on learning Chinese and experiencing Chinese culture, and extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese teachers and the organizers of the program.

This year’s program also held its first Chinese speech contest. Nine diplomats showed gave their thoughts on topics ranging from diplomatic work experiences, life in Shanghai to the understanding of Chinese society and culture. Sara Ferrando, an Italian Consul who shared how she had realized her childhood dream of learning Chinese, step by step, won the first prize.

After the contest, Yang Weiren, the director of International Exchange Division at SHMEC, and Zhang Ying director of the Consulate Affairs Division of SHFAO delivered speeches and spoke highly of the contestants’ performances. They hoped that more foreign diplomats in Shanghai would participate in the Shanghai Summer School programs.
