Students from Shanghai Shanda University decorate the traditional lane with graffiti.

A 100-meter-long graffiti wall appeared in an old community in Shanghai, decorating the traditional lane with a glimpse of color and vitality.

The graffiti wall is located in lane 134, Xinle road, Xuhui district. With the theme of nature, fashion and dream, seven students majoring in costume design from Shanghai Shanda University spent 40 days drawing the wall.

The wall in this lane used to be dark, mottled and blurred with small pieces of advertisements. Fei Wenli, a teacher from the university, together with illustrator Da Xiong, initiated the "old lanes renovation" plan, which aims to bring to old communities an artistic atmosphere.

"When we first launched the project, many doubted whether it was worth doing it. But as the graffiti wall took shape and more passersby stopped to observe and marvel at the paintings, I found the job really rewarding," said the illustrator.

Graffiti, the popular art in America and European countries, used to be forbidden in Shanghai. But the ban was lifted last year, when authorities allowed d graffiti lovers to spray their paint on several walls that the Shanghai Tourism Administration had listed as tourist attractions.

Actually, the walls of many universities, such as Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Fudan University and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), have long been covered with students’ graffiti. Some school even whitens the walls once or twice a year to create new canvasses.

Three locations in the city’s celebrated art districts have also been made available for graffiti. The best known among these is the 600-meter-long graffiti wall on Moganshan Road next to M50 Gallery. The 500-meter-long graffiti wall on Tian'ai Road in Hongkou district is famous for lovers, who declare their romances in spray paint. Animals dominate the graffiti wall on Wenshui Road in Zhabei district.
