Music play to commemorate victory over Fascism

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory in World War II, an original musical drama Shalom Shanghai will be put on stage at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum on Aug 26.

Shalom is a Jewish word meaning peace, which is used for salutation.

The play is set during the World War II, when more than 30,000 Jews found shelter in Shanghai after fleeing theNazi regime. At a time when many other countries refused to accept Jewish refugees, Shanghai became a "Noah's Ark" in the eyes of many Jewish.

Based on a script written by William Sun (Sun Huizhu), a professor with the Shanghai Theater Academy (STA), the bilingual show portrays a love story between Jewish girl Shana and a Chinese soldier. Things become more complicated when a Japanese officer also courts Shana.

The play made its debut at the 2013 Shanghai International Arts Festival, which was directed by award-winning American Jewish theater director Lee Breuer.

This time, Sun serves as director with Shen Jiayi, an associate professor from the East China Normal University as art director. The cast members are from China, Canada and Britain, including Paul Collins, a graduate student from England studying at STA.

According to Sun, the drama’s scenes are set in a Jewish-run cafe along the Suzhou Creek. It explores the intersection of Jewish refugees, Japanese officials and Chinese people co-existing in Shanghai during World War II. It also depicts the life and friendship between local people and the Jewish community during a turbulent period of history, despite differences in language and culture.

The drama will be played at the museum’s Ohel Moshe Synagogue, where the Jewish refugees gathered for religious activities in Shanghai during the war. The producer believed the real-scene performance will enhance the artistic appeal and bring audience different experience.
