Located in Sheshan Seismic Station at the foot of West Sheshan Mountain, Shanghai Earthquake Museum was jointly established by the Earthquake Administration of Shanghai Municipality and Sheshan Seismic Station in 2000. It mainly consists of a theater hall, an image-text hall and a seismic instrument hall.

The display area is 270 square meters. It was open to the public in early 2002. In 2004, the display area was enlarged to above 550 sq m and a report hall, an earthquake video auto-selection hall, an earthquake information hall, an emergency rescue drill hall and a Zhang Heng seismograph exhibition hall were added. The museum receives 30,000~40,000 visitors a year.

It has opened a summer camp for the popularization of seismic science together with the Earthquake Damage Protection Department of the Earthquake Administration of Shanghai Municipality more than 50 times. In 2008, in order to commemorate the May 12 Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake, the museum organized a seismic science popularization exhibition titled "United as a wall, making quake small".

In January 2003, Shanghai Earthquake Museum was rated as one of the first eight reception organizations of "Shanghai science popularization tour" introduced by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipal Administration of Tourism.

In 2002 and 2004, it was elected as an advanced collective among Shanghai popular science education bases. It was named as a demonstrative base for popular science education by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology and Shanghai Tourism Development Commission in 2004, and a national grade-A educational base for the popularization of seismic science by the China Earthquake Administration, and a national popular science education base by the China Association for Science and Technology in 2005.
