Fields of brilliant yellow rapeseed flowers always draw visitors to Fengxian district. In this spring, farmer artists in Fengxian made use of the rape flowers, wheat plants and water flow to create a giant picture of the Silk Road in the 4-hectare rape flower field.

In ancient Zhuanghang town of Fengxian district, where the 8th Shanghai Rape Flower Festival will be held from Mar 27 to April 12, workers are busy making a 5-meter-tall viewing platform on which visitors can overlook a panorama resembling the Silk Road painting.

The rape flower field was made into the shapes of five symbols of the Silk Road: camels, desert, the Dunhuang flying apsaras, the Jiayuguan Pass---east starting point of the Silk Road, and the ancient Roman Coliseum---finishing point of the Silk Road in the West.

"With the land as the canvas, farm tools as paintbrushes, our farmer artists completed the extraordinary cultural picture scroll,” said You Yanhong, director of Tourism Information Center in Zhuanghang town.

As the highlight of this year’s rape flower festival, the Silk Road painting will open to visitors until this June.

The district boasts the city’s largest area of rape flower fields---more than 200 hectares. The peak blossom time lasts from end of March and early April. The annual event usually draws many tourists to enjoy the fresh air and scenery, and to enjoy entertainment and activities of all kinds, including numerous folk performances. It is also an opportunity for visitors to experience the lifestyle of local farmers and fishermen.

To attract more visitors, the town has built a children’s playground and a parent-child theme park. Visitors can also have picnics at the Sea Bay National Forest Park and enjoy the rape flower fields at Metropolitan Vegetable Garden.

Rapeseed plants are grown for edible oil and animal fodder. Its stems and leaves can also be eaten. The plants are dark green and can grow more than one meter tall. The plant’s seed has been for a long time one of the most important crops in the Zhuanghang Town.
