With warm sunshine and gentle breeze, people may be in the mood for a lovely spring outing. While the cherry flowers have not completely fallen off trees, wisteria blossoms in various parks of the city are attracting visitors with their breathtaking beauty and floating scent. The Shanghai Tourism Bureau released a flower map recently to help visitors searching for the romantic flowers.

Most popular: Jiading Wisteria Park

As one of the only three wisteria parks in the world, the Jiading Wisteria Park has 28 varieties of more than 100 wisteria trees. On entering the park, visitors will be greeted by clusters of wisteria flowers with the longest flower shoot reaching 1.5 meters. April and May is the best time to view wisteria plants as the flowers bloom in various shades of purple, white and pink.
The Japanese-style wisteria park opened in 2000 to celebrate Jiading’s friendly cooperation with Wake Town of Okayama Prefecture in Japan.

Most classic: Guyi Garden

Although the scale of wisteria in Guyi Garden is not that large as the Jiading Wisteria Park, this city’s oldest garden has wisteria planted beside small ponds, on beautiful corridors and in bonsai garden. The ancient pagodas and pavilion, twisted brooks, stone bridges and pebble paths form a unique classical background for wisteria blossom.

Most ancient: Minhang Wisteria garden

This wisteria garden covers an area of about 5,000 square meters and features the style of gardens on southern Yangtze River. Tourists swarm here to visit a 470-year-old wisteria planted by Dong Yiyang, a poet during the reign of Emperor Jiajing of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The oldest wisteria in the city is 3.7-meter-tall, covering 24 meters from east to west and 14 meters from north to south when in full blossom.

April is the best visiting time, with masses of purple blossoms and the sunshine threading its way through the white stone frames. The small garden enables visitors to enjoy both the blossom and water town’s typical sceneries.

Most tranquil: Shanghai Oriental Geographic Museum

The museum has a 1,000-meter-long corridor of wisteria blossoms. It is refreshing to walk on the corridor, enjoy the breeze filled with scent and bath in rain of light purple petals. As the museum is not a widely known destination of wisteria blossom, you can avoid swarms of visitors and enjoy the flowers in leisure.
