New international students revel in Peking Opera
Updated: 2016-12-14

Some 20 new international students from Shanghai University (SHU) enjoyed the classic Peking Opera show, Wu Zixu, on the city's Tianchan Yifu Stage on Dec 3.

Adapted from historic materials, the show tells the story of Wu Zixu, who withstood pressure, overcame hardship, took revenge for his father and finally became a prestigious general and politician of the Wu Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).

The students were moved by Wu's unwavering spirit in the face of setbacks, and also deeply impressed by the artists' excellent performance. "The show gave me a face-to-face experience with Peking Opera, and deepened my understanding of traditional Chinese culture," said a student from Thailand.

According to a university official, new international students in SHU can also get access to other specially designed activities, such as taking a one-day tour around the metropolis and attending social gatherings.

"We will continue to raise the students' interest in Chinese culture, enrich their campus life and build a friendly bridge connecting Chinese and overseas students," he added.
