A meeting for the development of the Asian Youth Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 2016 was held at the school’s Xuhui Campus on Nov 26. Students and staff members from SJTU and Hong Kong Baixian Education Foundation, sponsor of the center, were in attendance.

Zhang Xiaozhen, in charge of international student services at SJTU, briefed attendees about the center’s improvements, such as the decorations in the café and reading room, especially the individualized dormtories featuring décor from various countries, which has attracted more than 500 students from Japan and South Korea.

Zhang also mentioned a series of cultural activities took place in 2016, such as making zongzi (traditional Chinese glutinous rice dumpling) for the Dragon Boat Festival, and carving pumpkin lanterns to celebrate Halloween, which proved extremely popular with students.

"We will continue to improve ourselves and build the Asian Youth Center into a hub for overseas students," Zhang added.

Students from China and abroad also actively shared their experiences at the center and their ideas for its future. Zheng Yue, a Chinese student, shared her story on making friends with her Korean roommate through calligraphy.

"The cultural ties are our solid foundations," Zheng said.

Opened in 2014, SJTU's Asian Youth Center offers a platform for students from China and other Asian countries to exchange ideas and broaden horizons, and also helps to boost the university's pursuit of international education.
