Some 100 overseas students from Belgium, Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Japan and the US immersed themselves in Chinese culture last month in Shanghai from Jan 2 to 20.

The students took advantage of their winter break to improve their Chinese language fluency and learn more about China through extracurricular studies at East China Normal University (ECNU).

Through exposure to a number of Chinese immersion programs, the students saw incredible improvements in their Chinese language abilities.

Apart from language learning, the students also took a one-day tour around Shanghai. They gained insight into China's long history and profound culture at the Shanghai Museum before visiting the ancient town of Qibao to appreciate the picturesque and tranquil views of Jiangnan (the region south of the Yangtze River).

The students regarded the time at ECNU very fruitful. Through the fast progress in Chinese proficiency and the rich cultural background of China they gained, many of the students were inspired to arrange future visits to the country.
