The Spring Festival Gala, hosted by China Central Television since 1983, has become an important part of the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations for families at home and abroad, as they each year enjoy watching the show together.

With its main venue set in China's capital city Beijing, the metropolis of Shanghai also puts on a variety of excellent shows as a parallel session for the broadcast on Jan 27.

A group of 10 international students from the US, Italy, France, Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Romania studying at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) were lucky enough to participate in this year's performances, staging a charming qipao (traditional Chinese women's dress) show during the gala and winning much praise from the worldwide audience.

For over a month– from selection, rehearsal and recording – the students put in hard work to combine both tradition and style in the figure-hugging Chinese dresses, perfectly integrating the cultures of China and the West to deliver a harmonious and enticing performance.
