Hanscom Smith, US consul general in Shanghai, paid his first visit to Shanghai University (SHU) on Feb 23 to promote cooperation between China and the US.

Smith had a meeting with Gong Siyi, vice president of SHU, extending his gratitude for the school's friendly relations with the US consulate general and his hopes for more cooperation in the future. Gong also called for more academic exchanges between scholars from the China and the US.

Smith later delivered a lecture to over 60 SHU students and teachers, sharing opinions on Sino-US relations, global trade and academic knowledge. The student audience raised many questions of concern, especially those involving studying and working in America. Smith earnestly answered their questions, and even shared his experience with handling different circumstances abroad.

He also visited the Center for American Studies at SHU, to learn further about its development.
