Teams from several Shanghai universities have qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind (OM) World Finals after standing out at the OM China contest, held at the affiliated middle school of Shanghai University from Feb 25 to 26.

The creative problem-solving competition for students from kindergarten through college has become a sensation in China since its arrival 30 years ago, becoming a cultural symbol encouraging young people to care about society and nature while developing their creative and teamwork skills.

This year's OM China featured 450 teams, including groups from Germany and South Korea.

The groups of seven students worked together to solve six predefined problems, and one they had not seen before, using teamwork and outside-the-box thinking, before presenting their solutions to the judges.

Several teams from Shanghai scored high enough to grab one of the 32 places at the OM World Finals, to be held at Michigan State University in the US in May. Among the colleges representing Shanghai at the finals will be groups from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Donghua University, East China University of Science and Technology, and Shanghai Ocean University.
