Inspired by the outstanding scores achieved by the men's football team of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM), the school geared up to establish a women's varsity squad on April 3.

This boasted the first women's collegiate football team in China, as well showing the school's unremitting efforts to promote football, especially flag football, among college students.

The newbies got their first training at the school's Pudong Campus the same day. After several warm-up activities, they received detailed directions from head coach Zhuang Hengli about the rules of the game and its characteristics to strategies and tactics.

"I once thought the game was intriguing but strange, and now I know it's safe and less-physical," said a member from the women's team after learning that in flag football, players defend by removing flag belts attached to their opponents' waists to minimize bodily contact.

Members from the men's team also shared with them some field experience, as the team won third place in the eighth NFL China University Bowl Shanghai division held last October.

"We will take full advantage of our men's team, and give technical support and protection to the girls," the head coach explained.

SHUTCM has gained fruitful results in promoting sports among college students in recent years. The establishment of the first women's football team will also help build up more athletic and cultural channels connecting the school and the world.
