SJTU awards Vietnamese scientific 'super brains'

The award ceremony of a science competition for Vietnamese students got underway at the Vietnamese cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh on April 1 and 2, with 27 students winning awards.

Initiated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) as the first science competition for overseas students, the event ran in parallel at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh on Dec 18, 2016, testing the Vietnamese youngsters' capabilities in mathematics, physics and chemistry.

The competition attracted 151 students from 20 schools, and 91 of them reached the finals.

Attending the award ceremony were some 100 students, teachers, SJTU alumni, and representatives from Chinese and Vietnamese enterprises, including Huawei and the Bank of Communications.

Xu Min, director of SJTU's development center for overseas students, shared with the attendees the school's international vision on opening up science competitions. He also offered the prize-winners generous scholarships and inviting them for further studies at SJTU.

The "Outstanding Prize" winner, Nguyen Tuan Hung, expressed his gratitude for SJTU saying that the competition provided an excellent opportunity for Vietnamese students to broaden horizons and delve more into China. Nguyen Duy Tung, the first prize winner, expressed his aspiration for advanced studies in SJTU.

The science competition targeting overseas students was a creative move by SJTU, and has helped the school adjust its international enrollment and take in more gifted students. The school has also carried out other programs and set up multiple test centers to attract foreign students.
