SHU student shines at national Chinese speech contest

Munisov Zarkamol, an Uzbekistan student studying at Shanghai University, stood out at a May 3 "My Belt and Road Story" Chinese Speech Contest organized by Xinhua News Agency, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the State Council, winning second prize.

The event invited people from across the globe to share their Chinese connections and promoted a spirit of openness, cooperation and inclusiveness.

During the preliminary session, Zarkamol won the appreciation of judges through sincere feelings, fluent Chinese and down-to-earth stories, and advanced easily to the finals on May 3.

At the final contest Zarkamol shared colorful growing up stories and unforgettable memories of overseas campus life, and also shared his inspiring "Chinese dreams". His performance earned him a ranking of second place.

His stories, along with those written by other contestants, were recorded and have been published by the Xinhua News Agency as The Belt and Road – People with Stories.

Winner of a Confucius Institute Scholarship and Chinese Government Scholarship, Zarkamol began his connection with Shanghai University in 2015. The one-year language learning experience led him to pursue a master's degree in international relations and foreign affairs.

Besides the academic achievements, Zarkamol also enjoyed a colorful campus life – hosting various events, staging cultural performances and gaining a high ranking at the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students.
