A group of 64 Chinese and overseas students from Shanghai University took a cultural exploration trip to Anhui province from May 4 to 6, learning folk culture and appreciating the local scenery.

At their first stop, the Tangmo Ancient Village, the students were introduced to a cluster of well-known Hui-style gardens – white walls, black tiles and wooden windows – blending into a harmonious whole with exquisite small bridges and flowing streams.

While taking a night stroll down Tunxi Old Street, the students immersed themselves in the distinctive riverside views which released them from the fatigue of their journey.

On the second day, May 5, the students set foot in Hongcun village, a well-preserved Hui-style settlement with a history stretching back more than 800 years. Boasting the quality of a painting, Hongcun's beauty won the students' great admiration.

At the ancient village of Nanping, the students took a "time machine" back to their childhood, attending a traditional children's enlightenment ceremony, a gift from China's ancient civilization.

They also had some first-hand "down-to-earth" experiences – trying ancient farm tools, learning a unique local engraving art, and trying time-honored techniques of ink-making.

The trip's final stop was the Emerald Valley, a natural treasure lying tranquilly near renowned Huangshan Mountain. In twos and threes, the students stood before the splendid views, marveling at the uncanny workmanship of nature.

The trip was a chance for the students to experience authentic Chinese culture and gain a sense of the country's history.
