An exhibition displaying the pioneering spirit and down-to-earth work style of Qian Xuesen, China's "father of space technology", opened in the Russian capital of Moscow on Aug 25.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), alma mater of the renowned aerospace scientist, was among the organizers. This is the second time the school has put on an exhibition about Qian overseas; the previous one was staged in the United States two years ago.

In the exhibition, there are more than 100 photos, documents and infographics recording how Qian was nurtured by Chinese and Western cultures, how the scientist set his mind to develop China's aerospace industry, and how he worked as an envoy of peace and friendship between China and Russia.

About 30 documents recall Qian's visit to Russia in 1956. They were well preserved by an archive at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and provided a glimpse of the two countries' prolonged connections.

The exhibition was staged on the 61st anniversary of Qian's visit, and also commemorated the establishment of the China-Russia Friendship Association 60 years ago.

After being on display at the Russian Academy of Sciences for two weeks, the exhibition will move to the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, Moscow State Management University, and the China-Russia Friendship Association and its branches.

Also known as Tsien Hsue-shen, Qian played a key role in China's missile and aviation programs after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. He made great contributions to China's economic, scientific and national defense development.
