A German-style vocational education and test center opened at Shanghai Polytechnic University on Oct 9. The new center is another result of the school's close cooperation with Handwerkskammer (HWK), a Germany-based vocational training center.

The center is the first of its kind in China, and has been opened thanks to the joint effort by HWK and Shanghai Polytechnic University.

It is also the culmination of an ongoing collaboration between Shanghai Polytechnic University and HWK, who agreed an all-round cooperation deal in May and successfully co-ran a nine-day welding course for a group of 32 students in Shanghai in September.

The welding course proved to be a big success, with the students gaining academic and practical experience at welding and impressing their German director both with their knowledge and practical ability.

Heinz Thomas Keindorf, president of HWK, attended the opening ceremony for the new vocational school in Shanghai and gave a speech, in which he said that the fruitful results of his school’s cooperation with its Shanghai partners had encouraged him to integrate more German vocational ideas and theories with Chinese traditions.

"I look forward to more Chinese students playing active roles in German vocational education," the president said.

Shanghai Polytechnic University has been endeavoring to strengthen its overseas connections in recent years, building up long-term cooperation with some 80 institutes from over 30 countries.

Its close relationship with HWK, and especially the smooth application of the German school's characteristic dual system, has helped maintain the school's leading edge in offering high-quality vocational training.
