The third annual summit on China-US university sports and education got underway at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) on Nov 10.

Sports and education insiders from China and the US, such as Jiang Sixian, Party secretary of SJTU, Larry Scott, Pac-12 commissioner, and Yao Ming, NBA legend and chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, attended the summit.

The first round of discussion which focused on developing life skills, leadership, and business values through collegiate athletics raised much interest among the participants.

Yao Ming expressed the country and people's expectations on the next generation of young players coming from everywhere, most importantly college, into the professional leagues.

"But the main purpose is not to train the players to become pros. It's so important for the schools, for the students and the communities to create a unique cultural atmosphere to entertain and unite people," Yao said.

"Only one or two out of 100 student athletes will go on to become a professional player, so that should be the first priority for any university program. I think university sports are just one part of education," he added.

The participants also shared their experiences on raising star student-athletes. Bill Walton, a retired NBA legend, explained how to help student athletes balance their dual status.

The summit concluded with Larry Scott and Xue Yanqing, an official from the Ministry of Education, shaking hands on the extension of partnership between the two sides through 2020.
