Updated: 2018-03-30

More than 70 international students embarked on a new journey at Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), as its spring semester officially began on March 5.

The newcomers, most of whom are from the US, Denmark, South Korea and Russia, arrived on SMU's student exchange programs or for marine engineering studies.

The increasing number of foreign students is testament to SMU's strength in various subjects featuring maritime navigation and shipping, said Shi Xin, vice-president of SMU, at an opening ceremony for the new semester.

Matthew, an international student representative from the US, said he is looking forward to studying in China over the next three months.

To help the students get accustomed to their new environment, SMU has been holding various welcome activities since last week.
