Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) held an orientation for new international students on Sept 10.

Vice President Xu Xuemin extended greetings and expectations to the students, motivating them to focus on study while enhancing bonds with their Chinese partners.

Professor Huang Xiaolin from the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering encouraged the students to appreciate the importance of scientific and technological exchanges.

He exemplified artificial intelligence as having been "conceived" by master minds from fields of mathematics, computer science, electronics, neuroscience, psychology, and linguistics.

Upper-class students also shared their experiences at SJTU, and passed on their top three living necessities, namely shared bicycles, cellphones, and mobile payment applications.

Yu Biwen, officer from the local police station, explained explicitly to the students the rules and regulations concerning their visas, as well as the procedure of their entering and departing from China.

The orientation concluded with students staging a series of variety shows. The dance featuring China's 24 solar terms, used by the traditional Chinese calendar to indicate the year and signify natural phenomenon, culminated the night and won lingering applause.
