Sponsored by Shanghai Jianqiao Group, the university was established in 2000, and has around 12,500 students and 700 faculty members in 2013. Its library holds 1,200,000 books.

The school began accepting international students, in 2009.

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals
2. High school graduate
3. HSK level 3 or New HSK level 4 (scoring above 200)
4. HSK level 6 or New HSK level 5 (scoring above 180) for Liberal Arts

Shanghai Jianqiao University provides Chinese language and culture courses for foreign students.
