Profile

 

This university has a history of almost 100 years and is engineering-centered but also covers the sciences, management, economy, literature and other disciplines, with around 1,400 faculty members. 

It has around 22,700 students, 17,000 of them undergrads, 5,600 graduate students, and about 1,000 international students (2013).

Its library has a comprehensive selection of engineering, social sciences, and other books, and many publications on power engineering, optical engineering, medical apparatuses, and publishing and printing. As of 2010, it had 81,735 bound journals, nearly 1.2 million books and 3.25 million e-books, in Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and Japanese.

The school was one of China’s first universities to get Minister of Education approval for international students, and has bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programs for them, as well as exchange and advanced study programs, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It has educated more than 4,000 international students so far. These students can apply for a Chinese Government or Shanghai Municipal Scholarship. There are many special international education services, such as courses in Chinese, English, Chinese-English and Chinese-German. To meet the needs of students at different levels, it offers courses in preparatory Chinese, Business Chinese, Basic Chinese and HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) training.

International students can also relax in the gymnasium, on the athletic field, basketball court, tennis courts, swimming pool, badminton courts and table tennis courts and there are social clubs that organize other activities to enrich their stay in China.

Chinese Programs

Chinese Programs
The International Education College at Shanghai Science and Technology University provides an international student foundation Chinese class to prepare for all programs here. It has nine levels of classes for international students with varying Chinese language levels. Each has 20 hours of compulsory courses and optional ones that students can choose from.

The teaching emphasis is on helping students with oral skills as the basics. It also encourages students to become familiar with Chinese pinyin and basic morphology and syntax before starting on Chinese phrases. It gives students basic speaking and vocabulary skills to make them more confident in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
